Parkinson's Support Group

Nazareth Home's Parkinson's Support Group meets the second Tuesday of every month. In November, the group meet from 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. in the Nazareth Home Chapel. Pam Zoeller, speech therapist, will be presenting on the benefits of LSVT Loud Therapy. She will discuss techniques for using the therapy as well as demonstrating breathing exercises.

Drive 4 Van Campaign!!

Remember the days of drives in the country, seeing the first hint of color as daffodils burst through, the beauty of azaleas in bloom? How about the enjoyment of fall with the leaves changing color, followed by taking in the wonder of Christmas lights? These are simple pleasures we all enjoy. These ‘road trips’ lift everyone’s spirits and for us at Nazareth Home, we know the residents especially enjoy the drives.

We have seen the value of these drives in the life of residents for many years, we are driving the same van since 1991! It’s time for a new vehicle. We have found a great one, especially equipped with the accommodations we need and room for wheelchairs. The community outings are important to keep us connected. One of our favorite outings is the trip to the Kentucky State Fair to see the sights and our entry in the Ugly Lamp Contest! These outings help keep us involved in the larger community and are important to residents, family members and staff.

We are asking you for help in purchasing this special, new van. Come join us for our campaign ‘kick off’ on Monday, September 27, 2010, from 3p-5pm. Please join us in the the lobby for some refreshment and learn how you can participate in making a difference in the lives of people served by Nazareth Home.

Our next offering will be presented by Dr. Todd Shanks, Neurologist at Norton Neurosurgical Institute of Kentucky. Dr. Shanks will be presenting on "Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery." The group will meet on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 from 9:15 am - 9:45 am in the Chapel at Nazareth Home.

Alzheimer's Support Group

Our next offering will be an Open Forum with Robert Todd, M.D. Dr. Todd is a board certified psychiatrist who is currently serving on the medical staff at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. Dr. Todd has been in private practice since 1984 in the Louisville area and has been providing psychiatric consultation to Nazareth Home for approximately 25 years. Please join us on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm. The group will meet in the Chapel at Nazareth Home.

Nazareth Home Receives National Award

Nazareth Home was selected as a Bronze Award winner in the American Healthcare Association National Quality Awards program. The awards program is a part of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award program designed to recognize businesses and healthcare organizations for performance excellence. The Baldridge Quality Award recognizes ‘role model organizational management systems that ensure quality improvement in the delivery of service, efficient and effective operations and a way of engaging and responding to customers and stakeholders.”
Since the inception of the program with the American Healthcare Association, 1543 applicants have been awarded the Bronze first step honor, 496 were awarded this year in 46 states, 9 in Kentucky.
Administrator, Mary Haynes says, “I appreciate our board and staff, especially Sandra King and those leaders who are champions of our quality improvement processes.” Haynes reports that Nazareth Home has been in pursuit of this recognition now for three years. “We have used all available tools to set our goals and exceed many national benchmarks. At the same time, we have tried to stay close to our stakeholders, listening to their preferences and modifying our practices accordingly.”
Earlier this year, Nazareth applied for and received a Best Practice Award from the Kentucky based consumer advocacy group, Kentucky Initiative for Quality Care.

Nazareth Home receives “Best Practices Award”

Nazareth Home receives “Best Practices Award” from Kentucky Initiative for Quality Nursing Home Standards

The KYIQ Best Practices Award is an annual award presented in recognition of exemplary best practices that serve as a model for other nursing homes to adopt in order to enhance the quality of care provided to all residents.

The KYIQ group is a independent advocacy group organized to promote public awareness to the need to preserve the dignity and well being of loved ones in the nursing home. They are working in partnership with the state’s Long Term Ombudsman program to provide a way for KY facilities to share their expertise with others so to achieve the KYIQ group’s stated goal of fostering collaboration among providers, families, advocates and elected officials to support a level of care for all nursing home residents. This “mentoring project” designed in 2009 creates a way for best practices and effective standards to be shared.

The award is presented to homes who demonstrate sustained success in the criteria areas of Continuity of Care, Training, Family Support, and Innovation in workplace, care and environmental practices. The CMS 5 star rating must be at a 4 with a sustained 4 in staffing.

Given that an estimated 74,000 Kentuckians currently are living with Alzheimer’s disease and this number will increase dramatically in the next 10 years due to the aging baby boomers entering the age of greatest risk, it is vital we all understand the needs of the individuals and their families who are affected by the disease.

Nazareth Home is committed to supporting the needs of our culture as we age. This series will be hosted and facilitated by a program director and psychologist who lead the dementia care program at Nazareth Home.

“Dementia 101 — Going over the basics”

Presented by: Dr. Stephen Bliss

Come ask questions, listen, and learn about various topics relating to dementia.

The facilitators are Stephen Bliss, Psy D, clinical geriatric psychologist and the clinical director for Charity Court, the dementia care program at Nazareth Home.

And, Gretchen Houchin, Program Director of Charity Court, support group leader and Alzheimer’s educator.

Nazareth Home Welcomes Lucky to Our Family

Karol Showalter, our nurse manager in Personal Care brought Lucky to our Home after her nephew Steve found him running down Preston Highway in the Hillview area of Louisville. Steve was very worried that the dog might be hit by a passing motorist so he lured him into his car using homemade Blackberry cobbler that Karol had sent home with him earlier that day. Lucky was taken to Steve’s home that he shares with his girlfriend and two other male dogs; “found dog” ads were immediately posted in the newspaper, on Craig’s list and the internet classifieds.

In the mean time Aunt Karol was contacted to see if she would be interested in another dog. That phone call brought Lucky to Nazareth Home. Karol had remembered that the nurse manager on Charity Court, Tiffany Terriaco was interested in finding a golden retriever for the Alzheimer’s/ Dementia unit so when there were no responses to the ads it was arranged for Lucky (formerly known as Robert Goulet) to come for a visit. The initial visit went very well and Lucky came back and forth for several days and now lives happily on Charity Court. A contest was held to find the perfect name for him and after the votes were tallied this beautiful golden retriever was named Lucky. We are all very fortunate to have Lucky living here with us at Nazareth Home, he brightens everyone’s day.
